rjd: RJD’s distancing leaves Congress apprehensive

The AICC is aware of the RJD’s systematic distance from the Congress since the Bihar assembly elections and has become cautious in dealing with the long-standing ally. The Lalu Prasad-Tejashwi Yadav-led party has refused to share any of the 24 Bihar Legislative Council seats for the polls with the Congress, raising tensions among allies amid AICC fears.

AICC general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra in a specific tweet last week expressed solidarity with Prasad after he was convicted in the fifth fodder scam case. This coincided with the RJD announcing candidates for most of the 24 Legislative Council seats to be elected by members of local bodies from across the state. Congress leaders feel that RJD will announce candidates for remaining seats and leave just one for CPI, even as CPI-ML and CPI-M have given unconditional support to RJD candidates .

AICC general secretary Tariq Anwar, who hails from Bihar, said: “When it comes to uniting secular parties against the BJP, the Congress has always taken a liberal approach with like-minded regional parties, even if it means some Sacrifice has to be made. For our electoral interests. I wish the RJD has a similar attitude towards the Congress, especially at these crucial stages of the fight against the BJP.”
