Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Thursday termed the arrest of his MLA Jignesh Mevani as “undemocratic” and “unconstitutional” and said Prime Minister Narendra Modi cannot capture the truth by trying to quell dissent. Mevani was arrested by the Assam Police on Wednesday night from Palanpur city in Gujarat and taken to Assam by air, officials said.

Criticizing Mevani’s arrest, Gandhi said it was an insult to those who elected him as a public representative.

Tagging a report, he said that Mevani has been taken into custody by the Assam Police over his tweet on Prime Minister Modi.
