Kerala’s Congress MPs back state unit against Shashi Tharoor attending CPM meet

Several Congress MPs from Kerala met Sonia Gandhi separately on Monday, to support the Kerala PCC leadership’s opposition to Shashi Tharoor, who attended a seminar organized by the CPM next month. Party insiders said Gandhi said she would consider the views of the PCC on the matter.

Tharoor also met Gandhi and reportedly said that he could have expressed the views of the Congress if he was allowed to attend the seminar. “I respect her (Sonia Gandhi’s) views on the matter and have conveyed my inability to participate to the organisers,” Tharoor later said in a statement.

When PCC chief K Sudhakaran publicly asked Tharoor, who was part of the change-seekers’ group, not to attend the CPM programme. Tharoor had said that he would seek Gandhi’s permission. Gandhi is believed to have taken the same position in the case of KV Thomas, another Congress leader who was invited to a CPM seminar.

Congress-CPM relations in Kerala have reached a new level amid public agitation against the LDF regime’s proposed high-speed railway project. The MPs who met Gandhi were K Suresh, K Muraleedharan, Benny Behanan and TN Pratapan.
