The Supreme Court on Wednesday stayed the anti-encroachment drive of officials in violence-hit Jahangirpuri area here and agreed to hear a plea challenging the action of the civic bodies against the alleged riot accused. A bench headed by Chief Justice NV Ramana ordered status quo to be maintained in the present situation and said the petition would be listed before an appropriate bench.
Senior advocate Dushyant Dave referred to a petition against the special joint encroachment removal action of civic bodies, including NDMC and PWD, and said that the “completely unauthorized and unconstitutional demolition” has been ordered.
He alleged that the demolition which started at 2 pm on Wednesday has started at 9 am and no mandatory notice has been given to the alleged violators for the demolition.
Violent clashes, including stone pelting, arson and firing, took place between two communities during Hanuman Jayanti processions in the area on Saturday. Eight police personnel and a local resident have received injuries.
