Making Toast: ID Magazine alumni and collaborators gathered at Dover Street Market London earlier this week to mark the launch of the new book, “ID: Wink and Smile!: The First Forty Years,” published by Rizzoli.
Magazine editor-in-chief Alistair McKim welcomed guests including Kate Moss, Edward Enninful, Simone Rocha, Supriya Lele, Juergen Taylor, Doville Drizzite, Mert Alas and Guido Palau to a cocktail reception, followed by a dinner by Rose Bakery.
The festivities continued the following evening with a party at Cachete in Shoreditch, east London. Attendees included Iris Law, Ikram Abdi Omar, Joanna Kukta and Leonie Elliott, and there was a special performance by British rapper Heidi One.
The book, edited by McKim, offers a 360-degree summary of the magazine’s history and cultural influence over the years.
McKim described the book as “a guide through the history of id magazine, from the hands-on staple punk zine to the world’s best fashion magazine, telling the story through the defining pages, and still defining , genre.”
Divided by decade, the book blends original spreads and covers of the magazine with images from Rihanna, Madonna, Amy Winehouse, Björk, Vivienne Westwood, Naomi Campbell and Justin Bieber. It includes works by David Sims, Wolfgang Tillman, Tyler Mitchell, Harley Weir, Enninful and Taylor.
The new book, priced at $75, also includes reprinted stories and archival imagery. There are also reflections by Moss, Helmut Lang, Sade, Raf Simmons, Victoria Beckham, Jeremy Scott and Phoebe Philo about being in front of the camera during their careers. There is also a celebration poster.
Founded in 1980 by Terry Jones, ID was acquired by Vice Media in 2012. Under current ownership, the magazine has expanded to 11 international editions and launched ID Asia, a dedicated channel to celebrate fashion, culture, identity and youth in Asia.
