Various unions of auto, taxi and minibus drivers have decided to go on strike on Monday, which may cause inconvenience to commuters in Delhi. The unions have been demanding hike in fare rates and reduction in CNG prices.
While most unions said they would go on a one-day strike, the Sarvodaya Driver Association Delhi, which has members who drive for cab aggregators, said it would go on an “indefinite” strike from Monday.
The unions have refused to call off their strike despite the Delhi government announcing the formation of a committee to consider fare revision in a time-bound manner.
Kamaljeet Gill, president of Sarvodaya Driver Association Delhi, said, “We have decided to go on an indefinite strike from Monday in view of the reduction in fuel prices and no action by the government to help us by revising fares.”
Delhi Auto Rickshaw Association general secretary Rajendra Soni said the “unprecedented” hike in CNG rates has taken a toll on auto and cab drivers.
He said, ‘We know that the Delhi government is forming some committees but we need to solve our problems which are not visible. We are demanding that the government (Centre and Delhi) provide subsidy of Rs 35 per kg on CNG prices.
Hundreds of auto, taxi and cab drivers recently protested at the Delhi Secretariat demanding subsidy on CNG prices.
“We cannot run our loss-making autos and cabs every day as CNG prices are on a gallop. This is a symbolic protest to oppose the hike in prices,” Soni said.
The city has over 90,000 autos and over 80,000 registered taxis complementing the public transport system.
Shyamlal Gola, general secretary of STA Operators Ekta Manch, said RTV buses numbering around 10,000 would also remain closed in support of the demands for revision of fares and reduction in CNG prices.
Feeder buses play a vital role in last mile connectivity running from metro stations to the interior areas of the city.
