Bengal Guv asks state election commissioner to brief him over incidents of violence during civic polls

Amid reports of sporadic incidents of violence at different places on Sunday during elections to 107 municipalities in West Bengal, Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar has asked State Election Commissioner Saurabh Das to apprise him of the situation by 10 am on Monday.

A Raj Bhavan release said Das should remain fully updated on the developments in the election process that took place on Sunday, which “prima facie indicates the failure of democracy”.

In a tweet, Dhankhar said, “State Election Commissioner Mr. Saurab Das has been called to inform the Governor any time before 10 am tomorrow, with alarmingly disturbing inputs, depicting a scenario of violence and anarchy.” The administration is in partisan mode and systemic failure #SEC.” , attaching release.

A senior SEC official said earlier in the day that “sporadic incidents of violence were reported. We noticed disturbances in some areas and took action.”
